Questions people ask before they begin

Straight answers about what business portfolio management is, what it is not, and how the book and the consulting work.

Is this about stock portfolios or financial planning?

No. This is portfolio management for real business assets such as oil fields, mines, plants, and capital projects. A regional collection of oil fields with different operators differs from bonds; a company differs from a mutual fund.

How is this different from PPM software?

Project Portfolio Management software sequences projects given short-term limits on people and capital; it seldom changes a company's direction. This practice operates at the strategic and tactical levels above it: informing strategy and aligning strategy with execution across the whole asset base. Unfortunately, PPM also means project portfolio management.

What is Portfolio Specific Value?

Portfolio Specific Value (PSV) is the net effect of the changes required to incorporate a new opportunity into an existing portfolio, such that the portfolio value of an opportunity equals its standalone value plus PSV. PSV is usually negative.

Do plans equal forecasts?

No. A plan is not a forecast. Plans are indicators and tools; the future is a range of outcomes, not a single number. Judge people on what is under their control.

How much value does good portfolio management add?

A 30% increase in the value of an investment program is not uncommon when using portfolio techniques, as evidenced by both practice and literature.

Is this about investment securities?

No. The focus is business assets, projects, programs, research, transactions, and other enterprise choices that interact across time and constraints.

Is it only for oil and gas?

Tony’s deepest operating experience is in upstream energy, but the principles apply to organizations coordinating multiple opportunities under constraints and uncertainty, from mining and renewables to pharmaceutical, power and utilities, environmental and carbon, and public health portfolios.

How technical is it?

The book ranges from foundational framing and comparison through simulation and optimization. Readers can follow the conceptual path and return to technical sections as needed.

Does the book recommend a specific software platform?

No. It discusses practical tools and examples, but the central framework is designed to outlast specific software.

Does portfolio analysis provide the answer?

No. It provides structured insight into alternatives, consequences, constraints, uncertainty, and tradeoffs. Decision-makers remain responsible for action.

Is the book financial advice?

No. It provides general information and business-practice insight. Readers should consult qualified professionals for decisions requiring financial, legal, tax, management, or other specialized advice.

Still deciding where to start Tony can help separate a learning need, a process problem, and a live portfolio decision.
